About The Position

Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS) performs pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical testing of all complexities as defined by Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act/Amendment (CLIA) to include specialized tests and analysis in one or more areas of the clinical laboratory such as Hematology, Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, Urinalysis, Immunohematology, Serology, Coagulation, Molecular testing and chemical and morphological examinations to obtain data for use in diagnosis and recording laboratory tests results. Due to the size of the hospital and patient load, the staff CLS must be able to work independently and successfully accomplish assigned administrative and technical duties assigned by the Laboratory Manager. CLS also participates in other duties relevant to laboratory services, patient care, quality assurance, policy and the safety of hospital employees.

Requirements

  • Current California CLS license.
  • Experience in all routine areas of the clinical lab and can demonstrate ability to adequately work independently.
  • Successful experience in positive customer service skills.
  • Computer keyboard skills necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs new employees, to include travelers, in the laboratory procedures in all areas of the laboratory, in order that they may develop proficiency and understanding of the clinical laboratory methodology used at Plumas District Hospital.
  • Completes and maintains his/her competency binder to be in compliance with all regulatory agencies such as The Joint Commission, State of California, OSHA, and CLIA.
  • Knows which are the correct specimen containers for every test performed in the laboratory (re/green/lavender-top vacuum tubes for blood, urine containers, cultures, and tissue specimens), and explains how to determine and process the appropriate sample for our reference laboratories.
  • Labels all tubes of blood and other specimen containers correctly with the patient’s name (last name first), date and time of collection, and his/her initials. Also, on tubes for blood bank studies, includes the patient’s identification number and places a blood bank identification wrist band when required by laboratory policy.
  • Makes sure that “timed” blood specimens are collected within 15 minutes of the designated time, notifying Med Surg or ER members ahead of time if a laboratory assistant is not available.
