About The Position

The Clinical Technologist is responsible for all activities with blood and blood components including, but not limited to, logging-in the units, thawing plasma, thawing and pooling cryoprecipitate, irradiate products and washing RBCs; setting up patient or blood product samples for testing by a technologist/automated machine; maintenance of lab equipment.

Requirements

• Transfusion Service or as a Generalist with prior Blood Bank experience preferred
• Bachelor's Degree in Biological Science or MT
• Clinical Lab Technologists issued by the New York State Education Department; or possession of a limited permit as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or restricted license to practice clinical laboratory technology at Westchester Medical Center issued by the New York State Education Department
• Ability to meet NYSDOH technologist requirements, make decisions independently
• Use cell washers, blood irradiators and plasma thawers will be expected, as will familiarity with Hospital HIPPA privacy policies
• Superior oral/written communication, multitasking, problem solving, and PC skills are all essential

Responsibilities

• Performing type and screen testing, cross matching, and antibody identification
• Calculating and preparing blood for exchange transfusion
• Ensuring blood inventory control is maintained at acceptable levels
• Recording all quality control and quality assurance activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed
• Ensuring all blood components intended for transfusion are in accordance with cGMP as required by NYSDOH, FDA, AABB, CAP and NYBC
• Handling other related functions as needed
