Job/Department Summary: Working under the supervision of a physician laboratory director or higher-level Clinical Laboratory Scientist, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist I (CLS I) is a licensed professional responsible for performing a wide variety of moderate to highly complex clinical laboratory tests and examinations. The CLS I provides medical staff with essential laboratory data for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness and disease within the university setting. Assignments typically include diagnostic testing ordered by licensed practitioners (e.g., urinalysis, pregnancy tests, blood tests, antibiotic sensitivity tests), specimen collection and preparation, interpretation of test outcomes, calibration and maintenance of equipment, and quality assurance in compliance with state and federal regulations, including the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent, as defined by the California Division of Laboratory Science.
  • Equivalent post-secondary education, training, and experience may be accepted.
  • Valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license (required).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a Student or University Health Setting: Preference may be given to candidates with prior experience in a university or student health center or with college-aged populations.
  • Cross-Training in Multiple Lab Areas Preference for candidates who have experience assisting across multiple lab functions (e.g., hematology + immunology + microbiology), or who can support CLIA-waived testing or phlebotomy when needed.
  • Commitment to Continuous Learning: Preference for candidates who demonstrate ongoing learning (continuing education, conferences, certifications, quality improvement involvement).
