Job Description Status: Full Time Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8am - 4:30pm With potential weekend shift coverage, as operationally needed The Flow Cytometry Clinical Lab Scientist will be the SME for the department. Complete all aspects of flow cytometry daily activities, including sample preparation, staining, acquisition, and data analysis. The flow cytometry technologist is responsible for testing with a focus on leukemia/lymphoma immunophenotyping. Employees are responsible for following all Company policies and procedures. These policies and procedures will include adherence to regulatory standards such as CAP, CLIA and OSHA, including safety standards in performing all aspects of the functions below. Specimen Analysis and Testing: Performs necessary tests for each sample as required. Follows standard operating procedures for all testing. Meets acceptable turnaround time and productivity. Instrument SME for initial and recurrent instruments set up process ensuring planning and compliance for instrument function. Independently design, plan and conduct multicolor flow cytometry-based laboratory experiments. Prepare scientific reports, protocols and standard operating procedures and other documents including validation reports under CLIA/CAP guidelines. Organization of acquisition template optimization for each panel as needed for the testing team to be autonomous for the acquisition check and decrease the number of technical issues at the bench. Owner of all instrument related processes like compensation, baselines, project management , etc. Recognizes testing errors/discrepancies or problems and notifies appropriate personnel. Resolves testing errors/discrepancies or problems. Processes/evaluates patient specimens in accordance with SOP, including reference lab specimens. Resolves issues with specimens that are time/temperature sensitive. Accessions specimens with accuracy. Labels specimens properly, divides samples as required, and obtains/distributes to proper sections and workstations. Prepares specimens for analysis according to established procedures for each specimen type. Stores specimens properly within the laboratory for future tests. Performs daily temperature and humidity checks for room, refrigerators, freezers, incubators, and/or water baths. Performs routine instrument maintenance following manufacturer’s specifications (including startup and shut down) and documents appropriately. Recognizes and identifies instrument/equipment problems. Performs and documents all routine and non-routine maintenance according to SOP. Maintains a clean, neat and orderly workplace including instruments and general laboratory equipment. Corrects basic instrument malfunctions and documents them. Communicates instrumentation status to appropriate staff members and notifies vendor to schedule service calls. Performs instrument calibrations following manufacturer's specifications. Utilizes standard quality control practices in decision making to ensure reliable testing and proper regulatory compliance. Performs proficiency testing in a manner and time frame that is consistent with good laboratory practice. Receives >=80% on all graded proficiencies. Performs and approves specimen testing using sound judgment and evaluation. Result reporting calls and documents abnormal, critical or stat results according to established protocol. Exhibits technical judgement by correlating test results and diagnosis and /or compares previous results if available. Recognizes and resolves problems or inconsistencies. Ensures that records are accurate, complete, legible, and appropriately filed and stored. Performs Stat and routine orders within established time frames. Communicates and logs critical values according to SOP. Monitors inventory levels, prepares orders, and has supervisor sign off on order. Anticipate shortages and prepare for absence during vacation or days off. Demonstrates competence by utilizing LIS for all applicable functions to perform job duties, including downtime procedures. Maintains laboratory area in an orderly fashion, free of unnecessary clutter. Keeps area stocked with supplies. Reviews quantities and expiration dates of all supplies. Takes inventory of all supplies at daily, weekly or monthly intervals, and orders appropriately. Verifies receipt, labels, records and stores supplies received. Prepares reagents as needed. Takes appropriate action to resolve issues regarding problem specimens/orders. Adapts work schedule to meet emergency staffing needs. Quality Assurance and Quality Control: Performs and documents QC daily according to established laboratory protocol. Reviews and monitors Qc for section. Performs proficiency. testing as requested. Participates in quality audits, as requested. Assists with compliance with regulatory guidelines including TJC, CAP, FDA, AABB, NJDOH, CLOA. Operation Oversight: Oversees operations regarding turnaround time, productivity, and prioritization of workload. Ensures adequate staffing for sections or shift including reassigning staff and monitoring staff schedules. Oversees technologists assigned to the workstations. Maintains harmony in the team and distributes workload equitably. Communicates and delegates effectively ensuring that section goals are met. Monitors and reports on. Safety and Laboratory/Hospital Policies: Works weekdays, weekends, and holidays as scheduled. Adheres to policies on vacation and holiday time, inclement weather, lunch and break times, overtime, and uniform/dress policy. Maintains and is responsible for the accurate recording of hours by utilizing the automated card system. Conducts personal business on own time and as designed or when needed in the absence of the supervisor. attending meetings. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Knowledge of Flow Cytometry principles and techniques. Prepare samples for flow for leukemia and lymphoma. Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing and maintaining records of patient results. Strong pipetting skills are required. Maintain, operate, and troubleshoot all equipment within the department. Communicate problems or pertinent information to the molecular manager. Assist in the administration of all Quality Control Programs. Participate in proficiency testing and inspections. Monitor inventory and supply levels. Maintain a clean and organized laboratory. Maintain accurate work records (i.e., maintenance logs, temperature logs, etc.) Excellent organizational skills. Strong attention to detail. Ability to work independently, ability to problem solve and decision-making skills. Ability to accept constructive feedback in a positive manner and take corrective action to improve performance. Perform general housekeeping tasks necessary to maintain the integrity of the laboratory. Other duties as assigned by Core Lab Manager.
