About The Position

The primary function of the Lab Medical Assistant is to provide patient centered care in an office setting according to the established scope of practice guidelines and standard of care and to perform test and procedures as ordered by the physician or other health care providers.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform basic medical assistant duties including but not limited to vitals, injections, and phlebotomy.
  • Work requires continual attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle and prioritize multiple tasks and demands and to seek supervisory assistance as appropriate.
  • 2 to 3 years’ Experience working in clinical laboratory or private office.
  • Knowledge of basic nursing principles, medical terminology, and protocols.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures related to infection control, environmental safety, and patient confidentiality.
  • Proper knowledge of medical chart documentation.
  • Completion of Certified Medical Assistant or Licensed Practical Nursing

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining equipment and ensure that the laboratory is properly stocked with materials.
  • Performs all daily quality control checks and documents findings on the appropriate daily control flow sheet.
  • Performs in office lab tests as ordered (urine pregnancy test, finger stick fasting blood glucose, Rapid flu, and strep throat swab testing) and interprets results based on findings and provides proper documentation in EMR.
  • Checks all lab orders in the EMR system to confirm the all test have been order with the proper diagnosis.
  • Collects and processes lab specimens, checking to ensure that all specimens are labeled correctly
  • Performs venipuncture blood draws from patients for all specialty lab test (non-invasive pregnancy screens and hereditary cancer screens).
  • Performs non-stress test for fetal monitoring as ordered and documents all necessary information into the EMR system.
  • Administers IM, SQ and intradermal injections as ordered and provides proper documentation and patient education.
  • Maintains accurate documentation on all encounters in the EMR.
  • Retrieves messages from the lab EMR in boxes and follows the physicians’ orders.
  • Informs patients of lab results through letters, telephone calls or the use of the FMH.
  • Provides patient education when indicated for test being performed.
  • Tracks and maintains a sufficient inventory and prepare a requisition for ordering needed supplies.
  • Reconciles EMR lab orders at the end of each day.
  • Assures compliance with HIPPS, OSHC & CLIA regulations.
