About The Position

The position involves collecting and processing blood specimens for testing in the laboratory. The role is supervised by a Phlebotomy Supervisor and requires adherence to CLAI88 guidelines. Responsibilities include performing pre- and post-analytical test processing, placing specimens on automated analyzers, processing microbiology specimens, and logging patient test specimens. The position also entails entering patient demographics and test orders into automated systems, maintaining equipment and supplies, and ensuring a clean work environment. Additionally, the role includes performing quality control, directing workflow in the absence of a lead, ordering supplies, and assisting in training new team members.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent - Required.
  • Two years of phlebotomy/accessioning experience in a hospital setting or 6 months of successful performance at Sumner Regional Medical Center or enrolled in a clinical laboratory science institution.
  • BLS certification from an approved American Heart Association or American Red Cross training center must be obtained within 90 days of employment.
  • CPT Certification from an approved phlebotomy certification association or similar professional certification (e.g., MA, PCT, EMT) - Preferred.
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate of a Program in Discipline - Preferred.
  • Formal Phlebotomy program with a minimum of 40 hours of clinical experience/certification - Preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collects ordered specimens from patients using age-appropriate techniques.
  • Processes blood specimens for testing in the laboratory.
  • Places specimens on automated analyzers for analysis.
  • Processes microbiology specimens for routine culture analysis.
  • Performs waived and moderate testing platforms.
  • Logs and distributes patient test specimens from processing areas to respective test areas.
  • Enters patient demographics and test orders into the automated chemistry analyzer.
  • Maintains scheduled and non-scheduled equipment maintenance and medical supplies.
  • Utilizes computer system for data entry and monitoring workflow.
  • Accurately registers patients using appropriate methods and registration procedures.
  • Performs routine department functions, such as answering the phone, taking/delivering messages, and transferring calls as needed.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work environment.
  • Performs and records quality control results for occupational medicine as required.
  • Directs workflow, lunch breaks, and breaks of phlebotomists in the absence of a Lead or Supervisor.
  • Orders supplies for phlebotomy and fills orders from other departments/clients as directed.
  • Actively participates during inventory.
  • Stocks laboratory supplies and manages expiration dates on supplies.
  • Oversees reference lab send outs for proper collection and processing according to reference lab protocol.
  • Oversees pathology specimens for proper collection and processing according to pathology protocol.
  • Oversees STATE LAB specimens for proper collection and processing according to STATE LAB procedures.
  • Assists in training new team members.
  • Stores monthly reports properly.
