Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent or applicable coursework to obtain required WA State Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy (MA-P) Certification.
  • Certification from an approved laboratory-training program with successful completion of a required internship preferred, or relevant work experience.
  • State of Washington Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy (MA-P) or equivalent, upon hire.
  • Medical terminology.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous training and competence in dealing with unique needs in the range of customer service situations with clinicians and their office staff.
  • Working knowledge of the various government regulations specifically Medicare and the Washington state medical Test Site regulations.
  • Working knowledge of the College of American Pathologists (ASCP) and the Joint Commission (TJC) inspection criteria.

Responsibilities

  • Performs venipuncture and capillary puncture blood sample collections on patients of all age groups, accurately identifying and labeling all specimens following established laboratory protocol.
  • Uses the laboratory information system or other reference laboratory's web-based applications to independently solve complex issues in a sensitive, caring, and timely manner.
  • Processes all specimens in accordance with laboratory protocol including proper handling, centrifugation, storage, packaging, and transport.
  • Responsible for collecting all insurance/financial information necessary for proper billing for outpatient collections, demonstrating knowledge of requirements for collecting ABN's and filling out MSPQ information.
  • Accurately enters orders and patient demographic information in the laboratory information system.
  • Answers and navigates calls with accuracy, efficiency, and courtesy using the best customer service tactics and practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
