The position is for a part-time phlebotomist at Carolinas Medical Center: Mercy. The role involves collecting and processing patient blood and non-blood specimens, performing patient registration, and providing support to patient care areas. The phlebotomist will also maintain laboratory equipment, ensure cleanliness, and stock supplies. The job requires adherence to safety and infection control policies, as well as the ability to perform minor laboratory procedures under minimal supervision. The position is scheduled for the 2nd shift, every other weekend, from 11 am to 7:30 pm.

  • Collects and processes patient blood obtained by venipuncture and/or capillary puncture in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Processes non-blood patient specimens accurately and promptly.
  • Assists in specimen preparation, receipt, and transport of patient specimens.
  • Performs patient registration and provides phone support for patient care areas.
  • Maintains competency with hospital and laboratory information systems as needed.
  • Trains new team members and/or students in the department.
  • Receives lab orders from providers and prepares necessary documentation.
  • Performs all routine laboratory tests and maintains documentation according to standards.
  • Maintains knowledge of specimen collection devices and tubes.
  • Maintains equipment, keeps area clean, stocks supplies, and organizes workspace.
  • Practices sterile technique and prevents cross-contamination.
  • Handles blood and body fluids and deals with infectious patients.
  • Performs minor laboratory procedures accurately under minimal supervision.
  • Receives and collects urine specimens for routine tests.
  • Maintains supplies inventory and communicates needs to supervisor.
  • Reports varying in-house test results and abnormal findings to clinical staff.
  • Complies with all policies and OSHA regulations related to safety and infection control.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Certification in phlebotomy preferred for facilities where phlebotomy is an assigned duty.
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques to perform minor laboratory tests.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to operate, clean, and sterilize.
  • Knowledge of appropriate medical terminology to communicate with staff.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and applications.
  • Knowledge of organizational policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and universal precautions.
