About The Position

The Fellow Instructor is a fully trained general surgeon who is Board eligible and has a full medical license to practice in Florida and who has elected to spend one full year learning from senior faculty and teaching residents advanced laparoscopic surgery. The instructor will not negatively affect the residents' experience in the operating room. The instructor will, teach, and perform surgery in conjunction with general surgery residents, chief resident, and attending. The chief residents will select room assignments for the instructor and junior residents. The purpose and stated goal of this job is to develop diagnostic and therapeutic skills of the candidate such that he/she is able to compete for top academic positions and perform as a leader surgery both nationally and internationally.

Requirements

  • M.D. or D.O Degree
  • Successful completion of an ACGME accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program
  • State of Florida Medical Licensure
  • DEA Certification

Responsibilities

  • Admission, consultation, evaluation, diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of patients with general medical problems for safe, effective and compassionate patient care.
  • Demonstrates dexterity and competency to perform and teach all essential and required procedures.
  • Effort to include at least 8 weeks leading resident teams on the inpatient wards.
  • Acts as an instructor to provide teaching, supervision and serve as a role model to other residents in the program.
  • Identifies need for patient education and orders or provides education.
  • Comprehensively documents in patients’ charts in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient and family issues, including age, gender and cultural diversity.
  • Efficiently performs in emergent situations, including adherence to established clinic and hospital-specific protocols.
  • Demonstrates applied knowledge base including integration of skills.
  • Participates actively in all educational and residency program activities and assumes responsibility for teaching residents, interns and medical students.
  • Precept residents and students 1 – 2 half days in the outpatient practice.
  • Assist with scheduling and coverage arrangement for house staff.
  • Organize, schedule, and contribute to weekly Grand Rounds and Core conferences.
  • Demonstrates awareness and applies knowledge of legal issues in all aspects of patient care, incorporating risk management skills, and quality control measures.
  • Assists the Program Director and GME office in obtaining resident participation in the Graduate Medical Education Committee.
  • Prepares residents for ACGME reviews.
  • Participates in the resolution of problems or complaints affecting the residents.
