About The Position

The Medical University of South Carolina, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery seeks candidates for a Clinical Instructor appointment to provide patient care in cardiac transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. There has been explosive growth in the advanced heart failure program, including acute MCS devices and cardiogenic shock, durable LVAD therapy including minimally invasive approaches, and heart transplantation including DCD. Primary clinical duties will entail heart transplants including complex reoperative cases and DCD transplants, and implantation of acute and durable mechanical circulatory support devices. Participation in the pre-operative evaluation process including weekly transplant selection committee meetings, quality meetings, operative and postoperative care will be provided. It is also possible that the experience can be customized to the candidate’s preferences with additional experiences in other cardiac procedures and lung transplantation, for example. In addition, there is ample opportunity for involvement in cutting edge clinical trials and clinical research including digital health, outcomes research and artificial intelligence.   • Must be eligible for a South Carolina Medical License.

  • Ability to push/pull objects, up to 200 lbs., unassisted.
  • Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected.
  • Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand.
  • Ability to see and recognize objects at a distance.
  • Ability to match or discriminate between colors.
  • Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception.
  • Good peripheral vision capabilities.
  • Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction.
  • Ability to hear and understand whispered conversations at a distance of 3 feet.
  • Must be able to maintain bi-lateral hand movement skills.
  • Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements.
  • Ability to be qualified physically (by medical personnel) for respirator use, initially and annually.
  • Ability to maintain a valid drivers license.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
  • Ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required.
