About The Position

The Clinical Genomics Scientist at Advocate Aurora Health is responsible for performing next-generation sequencing (NGS) data review, interpreting cancer and germline variants, and ensuring compliance with quality management programs. This role involves collaboration with various stakeholders to support clinical workflows and the development of new tests and technologies in the molecular diagnostic lab.

Requirements

  • Doctorate Degree in human genetics, molecular genetics, neurogenetics, cancer genetics or related field.
  • Typically requires two years of experience in human genetics or next-generation DNA sequencing.
  • Experience in a diagnostic laboratory and clinical report writing.
  • Familiarity with human mutation databases and genome browsers.
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to draft clinical reports and revise lab policies and procedures.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Oncology experience strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with genomic data tools and databases such as ClinVar, ExAc/gnomAD, OMIM, HGMD.
  • Expertise in clinical human genetics and molecular biology techniques.
  • Familiarity with Next Generation Sequencing basics and bioinformatics data processing pipelines.

Responsibilities

  • Perform NGS data review and accurately classify and interpret cancer and germline variants.
  • Research the significance of variants and evaluate evidence for gene-disease associations.
  • Write and maintain laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Participate in drafting clinical molecular diagnostic reports.
  • Perform quality control functions for molecular reports in compliance with quality management programs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of targeted therapies and next-generation sequencing technology.
  • Support activities of the molecular diagnostic lab related to clinical workflows and new test development.
  • Collaborate with genetic counselors, scientists, pathologists, and other stakeholders to implement solutions.
  • Support improvements for current assays and processes and troubleshoot complex cases.
  • Guide the bioinformatics team in building clinically relevant systems and processes.
