About The Position

This clinical fellowship in speech-language pathology is a 12-month, full-time, trainee position at the Sean Parker Institute for the Voice within the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, at Weill Cornell Medicine. The clinical fellow will assist in the comprehensive assessment and management of patients with voice, swallowing, and upper airway disorders at the institute while also assisting with and engaging in the clinical research efforts of the institute.

Requirements

• Master's Degree in related field
• Masters degree in ‘speech-language pathology’ or ‘communication sciences and disorders’ is required prior to start date in order to obtain the required licensure (listed below)
• Sensitivity to cultural differences.
• Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, caregivers, an interprofessional team, and with collaborating community agencies.
• Compassion and patience to make a patient feel comfortable
• Critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
• Detail oriented with excellent record keeping skills
• Maintains continuing education license and certification requirement.
• New York State ‘Limited License in Speech-Language Pathology’

Responsibilities

• Performs and interprets tests of voice production, swallowing function, and cough/upper airway function.
• Documents the evaluation results including recommendations.
• Counsels patients and caregivers regarding their voice, swallowing, and upper airway function, management options, and the benefits/limitations of the various management options.
• Develops patient-centered goals and objectives.
• Plans therapeutic intervention strategies to address these goals and objectives.
• Provides appropriate habilitation/rehabilitation services.
• Develops appropriate goals and objectives for each patient.
• Plans therapeutic intervention strategies to address these goals and objectives.
• Refers patients to additional medical or education services as needed.
• Coordinates services with outside professionals as needed.
• Consults other care team professionals as needed.
• Assists with, conducts, or directs research relevant to the field of speech-language pathology.
• Advises educators or other medical staff on speech-language pathology topics.
• Participates in conferences or trainings to update or share knowledge of new therapy methods.
• Performs other related duties as directed.
