The Clinical Ethicist at WellStar Health System plays a pivotal role in the ethics program, which is well-supported institutionally and recognized as a leader in clinical, organizational, and research ethics. This position involves performing clinical ethics consultations, providing ethics education, and developing and reviewing ethics policies. The Clinical Ethicist will be integral to creating a fully integrated and collaborative approach to addressing ethical issues within the health system. Reporting directly to the leadership team for the Ethics Program, the Clinical Ethicist will engage with various stakeholders to ensure ethical practices are upheld across the organization. The role encompasses a variety of responsibilities, including responding to ethics consultation requests, conducting individual and team consults, and analyzing and improving consultation methods. The Clinical Ethicist will work closely with healthcare teams to build trust and familiarity with the consult service, develop bedside ethics rounding, and provide ongoing training and evaluation for consult service members. Regular ethics case review meetings will be held, and the Clinical Ethicist will maintain comprehensive case records and documentation in both patient medical records and the ethics consultation database. Additionally, the position requires participation in night and weekend coverage for the ethics consultation service. In terms of ethics policy development, the Clinical Ethicist will review and revise system policies and guidelines related to the Ethics Program, ensuring compliance with accreditation and agency standards. The role also involves planning, delivering, and evaluating ethics education for healthcare providers, residents, students, and the community. This includes developing innovative educational materials and approaches, contributing to formal and informal presentations, and implementing ethics curricula for a wide range of employees. Research is another critical component of this position, where the Clinical Ethicist will conduct collaborative and independent ethics scholarship, disseminating findings through publications and presentations. The role also includes developing and evaluating the Ethics Assessment Survey, ensuring its effectiveness and relevance. Finally, the Clinical Ethicist will contribute to ethics programming across the health system, participating in various committees and initiatives to provide an ethical perspective and contribute to quality improvement efforts within the Ethics Department.
