The professional development (PD) practitioner at Baptist Health Richmond is responsible for new employee onboarding/orientation, competency management, education, role development, collaborative partnerships and inquiry. The PD practitioner identifies the learner, an individual or a group of individuals in healthcare practice with a gap in knowledge, skills and/or practice who actively engages in professional development activities while assuming responsibility and accountability for learning. These individuals may include organizational staff and/or members of the inter-professional team, which ultimately incorporates the healthcare consumer/partner; (patient, person, client, family, group, community or population). The roles of the PD practitioner include but are not limited to: Learning facilitator: uses the education design process and adult learning principles to bridge the knowledge, skills and/or practice gaps identified through learning needs assessment and evaluation of outcomes. Change agent: works to transform processes at micro, meso, and/or macro system level to use change management strategies and theories to drive desired outcomes. Mentor: contributes to the professional development of others and supports ongoing professional learning as individuals develop across practice, professional and educational settings. Leader: influences the inter-professional practice and learning environments, the professional development specialty, and healthcare, through lateral leadership, a form of “eye-to-eye leadership,” by collaborating with peers on complex problem solving or creative innovation. Champion for inquiry: promotes a spirit of inquiry by generating and disseminating new knowledge based on the evidence resulting in improved quality of care for healthcare consumer/partner. Advocate for PD specialty: actively supports, promotes, and demonstrates professional development as a practice specialty. Partner for practice transitions: supports the transition of nurses and other healthcare members across practice and learning environments, roles and professional stages. Coordinates academic student experiences. Serves on college/university advisory boards for coordination of academic/practice partnerships.
