About The Position

The Clinical Educator coordinates the unit's clinical and operational education needs. This role involves assuming responsibility for the orientation of new employees to the unit, creating an orientation program for each role, and developing, implementing, and evaluating sterile processing unit specific skills classes for new employees. The Clinical Educator collaborates with the unit manager to counsel and coach new employees during orientation to assist their progress towards gaining competency in unit standards and skills. Additionally, the role supports the preceptor role by collaborating with department leaders and preceptors to select appropriate assignments and learning experiences for new staff, fostering the use of adult learning strategies and critical thinking with preceptors, and participating in the development, presentation, and evaluation of the preceptor program.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technologist or applicable surgical technologist course of study.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working as a Surgical Technologist and/or competency in scrubbing in 2 or more surgical specialties.

Responsibilities

  • Assumes responsibility for the orientation of new employees to the unit.
  • Creates an orientation program for each role in the unit.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates sterile processing unit specific skills classes for new employees.
  • Collaborates with unit manager to counsel/coach new employees during orientation.
  • Supports the preceptor role by collaborating with CN, department leaders, and preceptors.
  • Participates in the development, presentation, and evaluation of the preceptor program.
  • Coordinates staff education processes through the development, implementation, and evaluation of education materials/systems.
  • Collaborates with appropriate resources to analyze needs and develop education programs.
  • Designs educational activities to include documentation of needs assessment and educational objectives.
  • Creates programs that incorporate adult learning strategies and critical thinking skills.
  • Identifies staff’s individual talent to assist in their personal and professional development.
  • Role models and promotes high quality professional patient care.
  • Assists staff with direct patient care and prepares the operating room.
  • Participates in assigned on call activities.
  • Utilizes unit daily/weekly rounding to identify educational clinical needs.
  • Serves as preceptor for new staff within OR/SPD and other education staff as necessary.
