About The Position

The Clinical Dental Assistant provides chairside assistance and clinical support for dental students, residents, and faculty in the department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Responsibilities Assists the operator at the dental chair; arranges instruments, materials, and medications on a prepared tray for surgical procedures. Clears operating area during procedures by use of suction devices, water sprays, cotton rolls and holders, and by retraction of cheek/tongue. Assists in taking x-rays; exposes and processes radiographs as required; takes cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) when appropriate. Sterilizes tools and surgical instruments and disinfects the operatory and equipment according to OSHA regulations. Prepares and mixes impression materials; takes maxilla and mandible impressions. Monitors patients under sedation consistent with standards established by AAOMS. Provides patients with post-operative instructions following procedural encounters. Receives, imports, and reviews patient records from referring providers and students. Updates EHR with procedure documentation, materials used, amount of time involved, number of charges, etc. Performs routine maintenance, such as lubricating equipment, changing filters, and sharpening dental. hand instruments, replacing expendable parts, etc. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
  • One (1) year of experience working in a dental office or dental laboratory.
  • Must maintain registration as a licensed dental assistant in the State of Tennessee.
  • Nitrous Oxide Monitoring and Radiology Certification required. (PROOF OF LICENSURE IS REQUIRED).
  • A Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) in the State of Tennessee, with certification in radiology and nitrous oxide monitoring, is required.
  • Knowledge of safe anesthesia practices.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and take instructions within a surgical setting.
  • Ability to take radiographs in a surgical setting, including periapical, panoramic, and CBCT.
  • Knowledge of anesthesia monitors and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the proper administration of nitrous oxide for patient care.
  • Knowledge of sterile techniques.
  • Computer skills, including competency in the use of MS Word, MS Excel, and Electronic Health Records.
  • Organizational skills to facilitate efficient patient flow in multiple rooms, ensuring the correct instrumentation and equipment is available before each patient encounter.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) with the Dental Assistant National Board Certification (DANB) is preferred.
  • Graduate of CODA accredited school preferred.
  • CDA (DANB) certification preferred.
