About The Position

The Mental Health Association (MHA) is dedicated to promoting mental health and integrating physical healthcare to enhance the treatment of individuals with mental illness while combating the stigma surrounding mental health disorders and addictions. MHA is currently seeking a Clinical Co-Responder to join the South Orange Co-Response Team, providing support to the South Orange Police Department. The available shift times are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM, and Thursdays from 1 PM to 9 PM.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree and a License in Social Work or Counseling is required (LPC/LCSW preferred; LAC or LSW will be considered with at least 1-2 years of experience).
  • Must have a valid NJ driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Knowledge of Essex County resources is helpful.
  • Ability to provide effective crisis response and de-escalation related to community mental health/justice involved individuals.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with responding officers to provide support and resources to individuals within South Orange.

Responsibilities

  • Provides co-responding efforts to identified mental health and crisis response incidents in the community, in collaboration with the township of South Orange.
  • Responds to calls in conjunction with South Orange Police Department for cases indicating a mental health concern, including mental health crises, quality of life calls, wellness checks, and linkage to community services.
  • Collaborates with South Orange Police Department on training and education to enhance understanding of social services and best practices for de-escalation during calls.
  • Develops systems for ongoing follow-up for community members needing connections to social services to prevent non-emergency calls and increase access to early intervention treatment.
  • Conducts direct follow-up with identified clients and collateral contacts to facilitate access to appropriate services based on immediate client needs.
  • Maintains record keeping, reports, and documentation in accordance with program requirements.
  • Remains on-call and available to South Orange Police Department during scheduled work hours via cell phone.
  • Provides monthly training to South Orange Police Department on various mental health topics as determined through collaboration.
  • Attends regularly scheduled meetings including supervision, agency meetings, and assigned training sessions.
  • Performs record keeping as required by funding sources through electronic clinical record software and/or accreditation agencies.
  • Completes other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
