About The Position

Position Purpose: The Clinic Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides essential support to physicians, advanced practice providers, and nursing staff by performing delegated clinical and administrative tasks that facilitate patient care and clinic operations. Under direct supervision, the PCT assists with rooming patients, obtaining vital signs, collecting basic health data, performing point-of-care testing, and supporting minor procedures. Additionally, the PCT contributes to a safe and organized environment by maintaining exam rooms, managing supplies, and ensuring proper documentation within the electronic health record. This role is integral to enhancing patient flow, experience, and quality of care in alignment with the clinic's mission, values, and standards of excellence.

Requirements

  • Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of one of the following:
  • MercyOne Patient Care Tech training program
  • 75-hour or 120-hour Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program
  • 136-hour certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program
  • Accredited Medical Assistant program
  • Accredited Radiography Technology program (for limited radiography) with valid State of Iowa Limited Radiographer Certification
  • Currently enrolled in an RN program. Successful completion of first semester of RN program.
  • AND Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (AHA or Red Cross, live class only), obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained.
  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter training (Child and Dependent Adult Abuse) within 6 months of hire, renewed every 5 years
  • Proficient in basic computer skills (Windows environment, web-based navigation, email, MS Office).
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people and in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
  • Requires the ability to read, write and understand the English language, and communicate effectively with patient, visitors, and colleagues while performing their job duties.

Responsibilities

  • Rooms patients, collects and documents vital signs, chief complaint, pain level, allergies, fall risk, and basic health history under provider supervision.
  • Assists with general office duties including registration, scheduling, referrals, copying, filing, and records retrieval.
  • Opens clinical notes and prepares exam rooms with necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Assists providers with minor procedures and patient care tasks appropriate to age and condition.
  • Demonstrates ability to recognize urgent/emergency needs and initiate appropriate emergency procedures.
  • Observes and reports changes in patient condition, behavior, or status to the provider or nurse.
  • Collects and processes basic lab tests (e.g., EKG, glucometer) following proper aseptic techniques.
  • Performs laboratory functions according to collection, processing, and documentation policies.
  • Retrieves lab results, radiology reports, and medical records for provider review.
  • Completes and submits charge tickets in the electronic health record; identifies billable supplies and services and obtains required documentation (e.g., ABN).
  • Schedules patient appointments, lab/diagnostic tests, and referrals; reviews test prep instructions with patients and refers to RN or provider for further education.
  • Sets up, operates, and maintains selected equipment.
  • Maintains supply inventory and stocks work areas to support care delivery.
  • Efficient use of supplies and equipment.
  • Deliver patient care through patient preparation, vital sign collection, and documentation.
  • Assist with various procedures, exams, and diagnostic equipment (e.g., tympanometry, spirometry).
  • Maintain aseptic techniques during preparation, procedures, and medication administration.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills (Windows environment, web-based navigation, email, MS Office).
  • Requires the ability to read, write and understand the English language, and communicate effectively with patient, visitors, and colleagues while performing their job duties.
