About The Position

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Climbing Wall Attendant supervises the daily activities at the climbing wall to provide a safe and friendly climbing environment for patrons to enjoy the benefits of indoor rock climbing.

Requirements

  • Minimum 17 years of age with knowledge of indoor rock climbing including climbing technique, belaying, routes and rating systems, and rock climbing safety equipment.
  • CPR/First Aid and Belaying certification required.
  • Employees over the age of 18 must pass a criminal background check
  • Member-service focus with the ability to communicate with a variety of age groups
  • Punctual and reliable attendance
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk, and hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds, push, pull, climb and reach and perform repetitive motions.
  • On a rare occasion, the employee may be required to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • All employees are required to follow our child protection policies, complete required training, and report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior immediately.

Responsibilities

  • Know and enforce all climbing wall policies and procedures.
  • Handle member concerns effectively and with respect.
  • Visually inspect equipment and facility during opening and closing of the wall and report any problems immediately.
  • Provide supervision of climbing wall participants to include belaying, auto belaying and spotting climbers.
  • Provide climbing instruction following YMCA established curriculum.
  • Belay climbers as needed.
  • Provide assistance to climbers by: determining the eligibility of individuals to use the climbing wall teaching/demonstrating proper use of climbing equipment (harnesses, belay devices, shoes, etc.) maintaining accurate and current records of attendance, equipment inventory, and a list of those certified to belay
  • Accurately complete and file all required forms and checklists.
  • Must know and understand emergency procedures to be able to respond to accidents of varying severity.
