The Role Multnomah Athletic Club (MAC) is seeking a Climbing Gym Coordinator to join our Outdoor Sports team. This hands-on role is responsible for the daily operations of the climbing gym floor and plays a key part in delivering a safe, organized, and welcoming experience for members. This position blends operations, leadership, and member service. You’ll spend significant time on the floor, supporting staff and climbers, troubleshooting in real time, and ensuring programs run smoothly. The ideal candidate takes ownership, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and values efficiency, safety, and positive team culture. You’ll work closely with the Climbing Gym Supervisor to support staff success and a high-quality member experience. Shift: Wednesday - Sunday (32.5) hours

Requirements

  • 3–5+ years of experience in climbing gym operations, outdoor recreation, or a related field
  • Prior experience supervising or leading a team
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily flow of the climbing gym, including front desk activity, climbing floor usage, and program transitions
  • Ensure proper staffing coverage and adjust priorities based on traffic and program needs
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional environment across all gym spaces
  • Inspect climbing equipment and facility infrastructure; coordinate maintenance or replacement as needed
  • Support bookings, group events, and program logistics, including check-ins and payments when applicable
  • Track and complete operational tasks assigned by the Climbing Gym Supervisor
  • Assist with inventory management for retail items, rental gear, and supplies
  • Identify and contribute to improvements in systems, processes, and workflows
  • Supervise climbing gym attendants during scheduled shifts
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and ongoing staff training
  • Provide real-time coaching, feedback, and performance guidance
  • Promote professionalism, consistency, accountability, and a positive team culture
  • Assist with scheduling and adjust coverage as needed
  • Address performance concerns in partnership with the Climbing Gym Supervisor
  • Support youth programs, classes, clinics, and competitions
  • Provide instruction and coaching to climbers of varying experience levels as needed
  • Assist in developing and refining climbing gym and Outdoor Program offerings
  • Ensure programs are delivered safely and consistently, following established standards
  • Serve as a primary point of contact on the climbing floor
  • Deliver knowledgeable, approachable, and professional support to members and guests
  • Address questions, concerns, and issues promptly
  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive environment for all participants
  • Enforce all climbing gym policies and procedures
  • Ensure staff adherence to safety standards and proper technique
  • Conduct regular safety checks of terrain, equipment, and systems
  • Respond to and document incidents or hazards according to protocol
  • Participate in ongoing safety and rescue training
  • Maintain clear communication with the Climbing Gym Supervisor and team
  • Document and report on shift operations, including incidents and successes
  • Coordinate with other departments and Outdoor Program staff
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunitie
