About The Position

The Clerk, Physician Services position at Meadowview Regional Medical Center involves ensuring that all necessary demographic, billing, and clinical information is obtained and entered in the registration system with timeliness and accuracy. The role includes distributing and explaining forms, documents, and educational handouts to patients or family members, ensuring all necessary signatures are obtained for treatment. The clerk meets with patients or their caregivers before or after admission to exchange necessary information and documentation, providing explanations of the process and addressing concerns and questions. Communication with the admitting physician's office, nursing unit staff, and other appropriate personnel regarding admissions is essential to exchange necessary information and determine placement. The clerk verifies insurance benefits, obtains precertification/authorization as necessary, and determines and accepts required payments, including co-pays and deductibles, or refers to financial counselors for follow-up. Additionally, the clerk researches the patient's visit history to ensure compliance with third-party payer requirements and completes appropriate documentation as applicable.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required, or 3 years of directly related experience may be substituted for the required education.
  • Billing or collection experience preferred.
  • Computer experience required.
  • Critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a stressful environment.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology strongly preferred.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, including computer, printer, copier, fax, and calculator.
  • Time management and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Verify insurance benefits and obtain precertification/authorization as necessary.
  • Determine and accept required payments, including co-pays and deductibles.
  • Research patients' visit history to ensure compliance with third-party payer requirements.
  • Collect co-pays and other funds from patients based on established criteria.
  • Check and stock supplies as needed.
  • Serve as back-up for other functional areas.
