A Library Media Specialist's basic objective is to provide accessible tools for students and staff to direct, enhance, and support the learning process. Knowledge of curricular areas and literacy is essential to serve the interdisciplinary needs of the learning community. The Media Specialist's goal is to work in a flexible environment, collaborate with staff, teach skills to students and staff, and maintain the school library holdings. This position also offers the unique opportunity for additional work/responsibilities with the Fishers Island Library. The Fishers Island School and Fishers Island Library work in partnership to serve our communities' literacy needs.

  • Provides direct instruction on information and technology literacy, study/organizational skills, including the research process (K-12)
  • Provides direct instruction in computer technology, including basic computer operation, productivity software, and advanced computer programming or coding (K-12)
  • Evaluates and selects print and digital resources for K-12 school
  • Focuses on national and state standards for information and technology literacy, including the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), New York School Library (NYLA), and American Association of School Librarians (AASL) standards.
  • Assists teachers, students, and other personnel in researching materials for use in the classroom to enhance classroom assignments and projects.
  • Coordinates independent study and computerized learning programs (e.g., Virtual High School, Accelerate U, etc.) to ensure maximum use of programs and compliance with program requirements.
  • Manages repairs and upgrades of both school and library/media equipment/materials to ensure the availability of items as needed.
  • Encourages the use of library resources (e.g., read-aloud, book talks, fairs, contests, displays, etc.) to promote literacy at school.
  • Inventories library books, curriculum materials, equipment, and other materials to track current library books and equipment.
  • Maintains an attractive physical environment in the library to promote interest in and use of library materials.
  • Experience in collaborating with local public libraries to foster a sense of community around literacy
  • Eligibility for NY State Certification as a Library Media Specialist (K-12)
