About The Position

Hawthorn Children's Psychiatric Hospital provides specialized care for children and adolescents diagnosed with mental health disorders. We are looking for a positive and energetic teacher for our acute Children's Unit. This unit will work closely with community partners and collaborate with our consumer's community schools. This person must have an interest in helping children with mental health disorders while maximizing each student's potential. Our educators provide instruction to youth in our Inpatient and Residential Programs guided by a Missouri DESE course of study, but have the ability, as well, to exercise creativity and flexibility in adapting coursework to fit the needs and abilities of the students you teach. Your time with the students allows you to see the difference we make in the lives of the children in our care. As a teacher at Hawthorn, you will receive ongoing guidance and training with the ability to collaborate with peers, work intensively with other disciplines, and receive classroom support; all while providing you the opportunity to flourish in your professional role with the students and the facility.

Requirements

  • The qualified candidate will have at minimum a Bachelor's Degree in Education from an accredited university and have 4 years of post-baccalaureate teaching experience in a school accredited by a state approved governing agency.
  • The candidate must possess a Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Lifetime or Career Continuous Professional Certification (CCPC) noting an area of special education.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to write effective Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) with limited assistance.
  • A basic knowledge of Microsoft Products especially word and excel

Responsibilities

  • Individualize instruction to meet student needs in a mixed placement, mixed ability classroom of 4-8 students.
  • Revise, develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Section 504 Plans.
  • Attend and contribute to multi-disciplinary meetings regarding students in your classroom.
  • Develop treatment goals for classroom use and report on those goals weekly.
  • Model and teach social skills to the students in your classroom.
  • Keep attendance and academic records and report on those records at specific times.
