About The Position

The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is the state of Florida’s social services agency. The agency oversees services for child safety, fostering, adoption, domestic violence, adult protective services, refugees, homelessness, mental health, substance abuse, childcare providers, human trafficking and public assistance. Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders. North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center (NFETC) is a 216 bed, all male, forensic, mental health rehabilitation facility. The Center is located in northeast Gainesville, Florida on 639 picturesque acres with regular sightings of deer, turkey and other wildlife. NFETC employs a variety of entry level to leadership positions including food service, maintenance, direct care, nurses, counselors, rehab therapists, medical doctors, security, psychiatrists, and psychologists. This is a highly responsible and professional position serving as the Classroom Teacher II F/C – OPS  within the Recovery Unit. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team player who works seamlessly across all sections within the program office. Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective communications.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques of teaching.
  • Knowledge of the principles of human learning, behavior and counseling.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of curriculum development.
  • Ability to teach individuals in a classroom setting.
  • Ability to prepare teaching plans, courses, activities and learning experiences for a variety of students.
  • Ability to develop appropriate curriculums.
  • Ability to counsel students on academic, social and personal problems.
  • Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to classroom teaching.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, certification as a teacher by the State of Florida and one year of professional teaching experience.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university can substitute for the required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide educational programs by planning, coordinating, and conducting same to include simulation exercises and classroom activities.
  • Place emphasis on preparing individuals to pass GED exam.
  • Counsels and advised individuals on academic areas.
  • Provides individaulzed/1:1 training to individuals unable to attend the Recovery Center.
  • Schedules and facilitates awards and graduation ceremonies.
  • Actively participates in the treatment process by completing Educational Assessments, standardized tests, monitors performance and progress, provides written and verbal observations outcomes and recommendations.
  • Provides feedback on individuals reviewed at Recovery Team meetings.
  • Maintains inventory control of educational supplies and equipment.
  • Requisitions and maintains, educational and therapuetic equipment and supplies, and promotes a safe and secure environment of all equipment by staff and individuals.
  • Maintains data base of all individuals in the Educational program.
  • Ensures all attendance data is submitted within 24 hours; submits monthly report of documented services to supervisor.
  • Will operate a 15 passenger van to transport persons served in community outings.
  • Attends meetings, seminars, and training sessions as required to maintain certification requirements.
  • Participates in on-going in-service education for professional development.
  • Assists in the escorting and monitoring of the people we serve.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
