About The Position

Provide instructional support services and assist teacher in instruction, preparation, and management of classroom activities. Work under direct supervision of the teacher to help meet physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities inside and outside the classroom. Assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP), including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of a certified teacher.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree, two years of study at an institution of higher learning, or have met formal academic assessment
  • Valid Texas educational aide certificate
  • Ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics.
  • Ability to work well with children
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to work with children with disabilities
  • Some experience working with children

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct instruction of students under direct supervision of the teacher.
  • Conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher; work with individual students or small groups.
  • Assist in classroom management.
  • Conduct parent involvement activities.
  • Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
  • Assist with administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
  • Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
  • Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Help teachers keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty. Note: Bus duty includes supervising students on the bus during morning, afternoon, and/or field trip routes.
  • Keep teachers informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
  • Assist Special Education students in their regular education subjects; move with them from class to class when assigned.
  • Help meet the individual needs of students, including transferring them to and from wheelchairs, lifting and positioning them, and signing or interpreting instructions for them, etc.
  • Help students take care of physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
  • Help manage the behavior of assigned students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed.
  • Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Work with assigned students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance
  • Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Participate in competence verification by a licensed health care provider for PCS Activities.
  • Understanding and competence to perform PCS services must include, but is not limited to:
  • Appropriate techniques for providing PCS, including written documentation procedures for SHARS
  • Appropriate techniques for managing adverse behaviors of the student:
  • Basic body mechanics, mobility and techniques for transferring students
  • The special needs of students with disabilities, and
  • Communication skills, including but not limited to techniques for communicating through alternative modes with persons with communication or sensory impairments.
  • Other SHARS duties as assigned.
  • Provide Personal Care as identified in applicable student IEP's.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Must be present regularly in person.
