About The Position

The Driver Class A Crane Driver and Operator is responsible for transporting plant material to customer job sites and between Devil Mountain nursery locations using semi-trucks, trailers, and company crane trucks. This role includes safe vehicle operation, secure load transport, and the operation of crane equipment for delivery of large tree material. This position requires advanced load handling skills, strict adherence to safety standards, and professional customer interaction. The Driver represents the company on the road and at job sites and must demonstrate strong safety awareness, mechanical aptitude, and care in protecting plant quality during transport. This is a safety-sensitive position governed by DOT regulations, crane safety standards, and the Company’s Fleet Policy.

Requirements

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Ability to qualify under company auto insurance standards.
  • Valid crane certification or ability to obtain certification.
  • Strong safety record and defensive driving practices.
  • Ability to secure loads and manage weight requirements.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform minor roadside repairs.
  • Customer service mindset and professional communication skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating crane trucks for large tree material.
  • Basic knowledge of plant identification and plant handling practices to help ensure plant quality during loading, transport, and delivery.
  • Experience delivering to construction or residential job sites.
  • Experience working in nursery, landscape, or agricultural environments.

Responsibilities

  • Hold a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License and qualify under company auto insurance standards.
  • Maintain valid crane certification or obtain certification as required during employment.
  • Operate semi-trucks, trailers, and crane trucks in compliance with DOT regulations and company safety standards.
  • Perform thorough pre- and post-trip inspections of both truck and crane equipment and report mechanical or safety concerns immediately.
  • Safely attach and detach loaded trailers.
  • Ensure all loads are properly secured, tie-downs are correctly applied, and weight requirements are followed.
  • Deliver plant material to business, residential, and construction sites.
  • Transport and transfer inventory between nursery locations, including designated loop routes or trailer swaps at central meeting points.
  • Operate crane equipment to load and unload large tree material safely at customer sites and nursery locations.
  • Inspect crane equipment prior to operation and verify proper rigging, load balance, and safe site conditions before lifting.
  • Follow all crane safety protocols and job-site safety procedures, including maintaining safe clearance from structures, utilities, and personnel.
  • Communicate estimated arrival times and maintain professional, courteous customer interactions.
  • Assist with loading and unloading plant material as needed.
  • Perform minor roadside repairs when necessary (e.g., air line issues).
  • Complete overnight deliveries when assigned.
  • Follow all company safety standards, DOT regulations, and Fleet Policy requirements.
