The Class A CDL Combo P Driver position at Old Dominion Freight Line involves a dual role as a Combination Driver and Dockworker. This essential role supports the company's commitment to delivering customer freight safely, accurately, and on time. The driver is responsible for loading and unloading freight, operating various tractor-trailer combinations, and ensuring the timely delivery of freight between service centers and customer locations. The position requires a strong work ethic, commitment to safety, and a passion for providing exceptional service in a dynamic environment.

  • Load and unload freight on trailers using a motorized forklift, pallet jack, or manually in compliance with state and federal DOT guidelines.
  • Transport self and/or freight continuously throughout the service center on non-forgiving surfaces.
  • Utilize Dock Yard Management System to monitor freight shipment locations throughout the service center.
  • Read and interpret shipping labels and complete various forms utilized in freight movement.
  • Hand load, rewrap, or stack freight as necessary.
  • Ensure the quality loading of all trailers and secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies.
  • Operate vehicle safely within DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection, maintenance, and transportation of hazardous materials.
  • Meet or exceed the medical standards of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation and pass drug and alcohol tests.
  • Be available for work to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid commercial driver's license (CDL-A) with hazardous materials and twin/triple trailer endorsements.
  • Acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • 12 months previous tractor-trailer driving experience or completion of a State Certified driving school or Old Dominion Truck Driver Training program.
  • Ability to read, write, speak English and perform simple mathematical calculations.
  • Good oral communication skills and ability to follow instructions via two-way radio or phone.
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection, and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate hand-held mini-computer when required.
  • Experience with Dock Yard Management System.
  • Familiarity with freight movement forms and shipping orders.
