The Claims Trainee for Property Damage is responsible for handling Auto Property Claims in compliance with the NJ Unfair Practices Act. This role involves a fast-paced environment with significant phone work, requiring patience and professionalism in challenging situations. The trainee will investigate claims, assess liability, negotiate settlements, and maintain effective communication with all parties involved.

  • Investigate and interpret policy provisions, endorsements, and conditions to make coverage determinations in automobile property claims.
  • Identify and investigate contested coverage claims with recommendations prepared for the coverage committee.
  • Conduct investigations of auto accidents to assess liability, including interviewing claimants, witnesses, and investigating officers.
  • Analyze investigations to determine proximate cause, negligence, and damages.
  • Evaluate and adjust reserves as necessary.
  • Prepare dispatch instructions for field personnel to inspect vehicles.
  • Negotiate and settle claims within individual authority limits.
  • Submit claims for approval to supervisors when necessary or for guidance and review.
  • Maintain an effective follow-up system on pending files.
  • Prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously while adjusting to fluctuating workloads.
  • Advise insureds, claimants, and brokers on the status of claims.
  • Act as an intermediary between the company, preferred vendors, and customers.
  • Resolve disputes that may arise during the claims process.
  • Ensure service, loss, and expense control are maintained at all times.
  • Adhere to privacy guidelines, laws, and regulations pertaining to claims handling.
  • Investigate and initiate subrogation when applicable.
  • Handle and respond to arbitration and special civil part lawsuits related to property damage.
  • Participate in catastrophic claim handling as requested, which may include travel and extended hours.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Basic personal computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products.
  • Bachelor's Degree from a four-year college or university or 3-5 years of equivalent experience.
