This position supports our medical professional liability line of business and preferred location is our Northeast Region (hybrid/remote), which includes Virginia to New England. We may also consider qualified candidates located in Birmingham AL (hybrid). For full consideration, candidates should have medical professional liability claims handling experience. The primary responsibility of the Claims Specialist position is to provide direction and guidance throughout the life of the claim. The Claims Specialist directs the management of claims including claims investigation, coverage analysis, monitoring of defense counsel activities, control of legal expenses, reserving, and providing technical expertise throughout the life of the claim file.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum two years’ experience in the legal, medical, or insurance field, with a high degree of specialized and technical competence.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Proven leadership, communication, and writing skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship management expertise.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks effectively and efficiently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to learn new computer software applications.
  • Extensive travel may be required.
  • Willingness and ability to be available beyond normal business hours.
  • Ability to attend business functions and present a positive image of the Company.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree or certification in the medical, legal, or insurance field preferred.
  • Professional liability experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in review processes to evaluate coverage, liability, causation, damages, case value, reserves, and manage total claims cost. Ensure proper file documentation of assigned files in compliance with company and state requirements.
  • Collaborate with defense counsel regarding case value, defense tactics, and strategies per department guidelines. Maintain communication with the director, defense counsel, and the insured. Participate in selection of expert witnesses when appropriate.
  • Responsible for preparing reports for management by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing claim information. Keep appraised of changes in the law and court procedures affecting claims in assigned jurisdictions.
  • Represent the Company through attendance at trials, settlement conferences, mediations, and insured meetings.
  • Review and approve reasonable legal expenses and fees associated with the claim file and negotiate adjustment of charges when appropriate.
  • Recommend resolution strategies and participate in settlement negotiations when appropriate.
  • Perform special projects as directed by management.
