About The Position

The City of Columbus is seeking a full-time Legal Investigator/Paralegal for its Claims Division. This role involves managing delinquent income tax cases and requires a candidate with strong organizational skills, reliability, and the ability to maintain confidentiality while working with the public. The position entails reviewing accounts, preparing legal documents, attending court hearings, and maintaining records related to tax collections.

Requirements

• Degree or certification in paralegal studies preferred.
• Three or more years of experience as a paralegal preferred.
• Knowledge of civil litigation concepts, practices, and procedures.
• Knowledge of filing procedures and requirements of courts and agencies.
• Ability to pass a background check and a drug screen.

Responsibilities

• Manage delinquent income tax cases.
• Review accounts referred for filing in the Franklin County Municipal Court and the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas.
• Prepare complaints and pleadings, obtain service, draft motions and judgment entries, and obtain judgments and certificates of judgment.
• Attend court as needed for hearings and mediations.
• Participate in settlement negotiations when appropriate.
• Maintain all physical and electronic records and files on assigned cases.
• Process and maintain records of incoming payments.
• Provide information to debtors regarding payment plans.
• Provide general office support to attorneys and other staff members.
