This position will ensure high quality claims handling within the Healthcare Professional Liability (“HPL”) Claims Department of General Insurance (AIG Claims, Inc.).

Requirements

  • 7+ years of medical malpractice / professional liability complex claims and/or complex litigation experience.
  • Law Degree (J.D.) or equivalent preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong negotiation, litigation management and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational and computer skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical and investigative mindset with critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to make sound business decisions and effectively evaluate and resolve ambiguous, complex and challenging business problems.
  • Extensive experience in leading complex negotiations and developing resolution strategies.
  • Ability to lead multiple and shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally.

Responsibilities

  • Manage an active claims portfolio of the most complex and high exposure medical malpractice (and some GL) claims at primary and excess coverage layers.
  • Apply best claims handling practices and follow company protocols to manage and oversee all aspects of claims handling, including coverage determinations, investigations, and trial and resolution strategies.
  • Investigate losses, orchestrate defense strategies for healthcare provider insureds, conduct independent assessments as to exposures and develop/implement effective litigation and action plans.
  • Drive resolution of claims by collaborating with internal and external business partners to develop, own and execute a claim resolution strategy.
  • Manage timely and adequate reserves, negotiate complex settlements, and partner with insureds and counsel to manage complex litigation.
  • Determine the scope and extent of available coverage and vet/report complex coverage issues.
  • Achieve quality standards by effectively managing each claim to ensure compliance with company protocols.
  • Report large losses and potential challenges to senior leadership.
  • Prepare and present high profile, complex information to senior leadership, customers, counsel, insureds, brokers, and others.
  • Maintain full compliance with NPDB and state medical malpractice reporting requirements.
  • Participate in mediations, attend trials and occasionally conduct outside claim audits.
  • Negotiate multi-million dollar claims with premier plaintiffs’ counsel nationwide.
  • Effectively strategize and coordinate litigation budgets with counsel, insureds and third party vendors.
  • Keep abreast of significant changes in the law, claims and industry trends.
