About The Position

The Pipe Foreman is a hands-on leader responsible for overseeing the crew as well as operating heavy equipment in the installation of underground utilities such as water, sewer, and storm systems. This position combines skilled equipment operation with field leadership to ensure work is performed safely, accurately, and efficiently according to plans and specifications. The Pipe Foreman works directly alongside the crew, setting the pace for production and quality while ensuring that all safety and operational standards are upheld.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering documents.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with all levels of staff and external stakeholders.
  • Strong mechanical skills and attention to detail for working with infrastructure and associated equipment.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to obtain a DOT physical certification. A Class A CDL is preferred.
  • Experience with the operation of a wide range of equipment required for project completion.
  • Demonstrated ability to assign tasks, provide clear instructions, and motivate crew members to work safely, productively, and to high standards of quality.
  • Dedicated to always maintaining a safe and compliant work environment.
  • Must demonstrate reliable attendance and consistently show up to work on time.
  • Strong team player with exemplary character and the ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to work independently with little to no supervision, demonstrating initiative and the ability to solve problems on the job.
  • Willingness to travel and work non-standard hours, including long shifts, weekends, and emergency coverage as needed.
  • Ability to mentor and support less experienced team members, fostering professional growth.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations on an assigned project, ensuring all tasks are completed efficiently, in compliance with project specifications, and in alignment with safety and quality standards. Actively participate in fieldwork as needed, combining hands-on involvement with oversight responsibilities. Continuously monitor field operations for safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for customers, inspectors, subcontractors, and vendors on-site as needed or as assigned. Communicate regularly with internal stakeholders (e.g., project managers and supervisors) regarding project status, changes, resource needs, and any issues encountered.
  • Review job sites to confirm that the details provided in project documentation align with actual on-site conditions. In cases where documentation is incomplete or unavailable, assess the situation in the field and develop a plan on-site. Adjust resources, equipment, and crew assignments as necessary based on these assessments.
  • Conduct job hazard analyses and lead daily/weekly safety briefings (toolbox talks). Enforce all safety protocols, including the company safety policies and procedures. Implement corrective actions promptly when necessary to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Train and mentor crew members on safety practices, construction techniques, and equipment use. Foster positive labor relations and build a cohesive, productive team.
  • Ensure the work site is secure at the end of each shift to protect the public, safeguard company equipment and property (onsite, home, and office), and prevent theft or damage. Implement proper security measures to ensure that all tools, machinery, materials, and vehicles are accounted for and stored safely.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
  • Serve as the primary operator for trenching, bedding, pipe placement, and backfill operations.
  • Lead by example through active participation in daily installation activities.
  • Interpret plans, grades, and pipe layouts to establish proper line and elevation.
  • Verify pipe alignment, grade, and joint integrity throughout installation.
  • Ensure all work is performed safely, efficiently, and to specification.
  • Direct and work alongside crew members to complete daily production goals.
  • Provide clear direction and hands-on guidance to pipe layers and laborers.
  • Enforce company safety policies and conduct daily safety checks of work areas, equipment, and trench conditions to ensure compliance and safe practices.
  • Lead by example in the use of PPE and adherence to safe work practices.
  • Coordinate material deliveries, equipment needs, and overall jobsite organization.
  • Ensure efficient use and proper maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Anticipate equipment and material needs to maintain consistent production and minimize downtime.
  • Monitor daily progress to maintain schedule and productivity goals.
  • Communicate project updates, needs, and concerns to the Construction Manager.
  • Assist in tracking quantities, job costs, and resource usage to support project reporting.
