Sarasota County Government is seeking an intern in the Traffic Engineering section of Transportation. Sarasota County continues to develop a state-of-the-art traffic management center which incorporates some of the latest technologies in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). This internship provides the opportunity to learn about cutting-edge technology and the future of transportation in Florida and the United States. Requirements

  • Ages 16-17 with parental consent, or 18 and above.
  • Eligible to work in the United States – we love local, national, and international students!
  • Active, enrolled student seeking a Bachelor's of Science in Civil Engineering (B.S.C.E.) or related field.
  • Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment for a period of five (5) years.
  • I-9 Acceptable Documents to show your identity and authorization to work.
  • U.S. Social Security Card (signed, physical card).

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates pursuing a B.S.C.E. or Data Science or related field and having completed their second year of university

Responsibilities

  • Assist Traffic Engineering Manager and Traffic Engineers with traffic studies and analyses
  • Assist TMC staff with acquisition and analysis of traffic and signal system data.
  • Assist Traffic Technical Specialist with traffic data collection
  • Conduct site investigations
  • Process data using Excel
  • Assist with written reports
  • Respond to citizen requests (with direction from senior engineers
  • Collaborate with your department colleagues to make and influence real changes.
  • A presentation to the County Administrator and other County Leadership staff is required at the close of the internship program on Friday, August 7, 2026.
  • Participate in all organized intern events and trainings.
