About The Position

Expanse Electrical is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Civil/Structural Professional Engineer (PE) to join our Power Delivery Engineering team. This role is critical to the successful design and execution of high-voltage substation projects ranging from 34.5 kV to 500 kV. The ideal candidate will lead the civil and structural design efforts for both new builds and upgrades of transmission and distribution substations, ensuring full compliance with client specifications, industry codes, and safety standards. This is a design leadership role that requires technical depth, cross-disciplinary coordination, and a proactive approach to managing deliverables from concept through construction. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing and reviewing engineering drawings, calculations, and specifications, while also mentoring junior engineers and supporting field execution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one U.S. state (Texas preferred or ability to obtain reciprocity).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in civil/structural engineering design for high-voltage substations.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and structural analysis tools such as STAAD Pro, RISA, or equivalent.
  • Deep understanding of AISC, ACI, ASCE 7, and NESC codes and standards.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary engineering environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Structural Engineering or related field.
  • Experience with EPC delivery models, utility projects, and design-to-construction coordination.
  • Familiarity with MicroStation, PLS-CADD, or substation-specific design platforms.
  • Experience in seismic and wind load analysis for substation structures.
  • Knowledge of permitting processes and environmental considerations for substation sites.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design of substation foundations, steel structures, equipment supports, control buildings, and site grading.
  • Develop site plans, grading plans, and drainage systems using civil engineering principles and applicable standards.
  • Perform structural analyses for steel, concrete, and foundation systems in accordance with AISC, ACI, ASCE 7, and NESC codes.
  • Ensure all designs meet utility standards, IEEE/NESC requirements, and local permitting codes.
  • Collaborate with electrical, protection & control, and geotechnical teams to ensure integrated and constructible designs.
  • Review vendor drawings and third-party structural packages for compliance with project requirements.
  • Support construction teams by responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and conducting site visits as needed.
  • Participate in design reviews, constructability assessments, and value engineering exercises.
  • Manage civil/structural scope schedules, budgets, and deliverables across multiple projects.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
  • Conduct quality reviews of engineering deliverables to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance.
  • Maintain documentation and records in accordance with company and client standards.
