About The Position

SWCA is seeking enthusiastic Civil or Environmental Engineering Co-ops (HR Title: Intern – Engineering) to join our Summer 2026 teams in Cincinnati or Pittsburgh. This role offers a dynamic mix of office and field experience, giving you the chance to collaborate with talented, multi-disciplinary engineering professionals. As an Engineering Co-op, you will apply your passion for civil or environmental engineering in real-world projects, while building critical skills in communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. We are looking for students with a positive attitude, eagerness to learn, flexibility, and strong collaboration skills. This co-op is not just a summer job – it’s your gateway to a thriving career in consulting, guided by leaders committed to your professional growth. Your summer will be filled with exciting challenges and hands-on projects, running from early May (if possible) through mid-to-late August 2026. Students who are available to start early or extend beyond the standard end date are welcome to contribute even more to our projects. In addition to technical experience, the program includes regular presentations from SWCA leaders, providing insight into our company culture and the broader environmental consulting industry. This is a paid, 40-hour/week co-op with a competitive rate of $24/hour. Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university pursuing a bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering, or a related field, and having completed at least the first year of the engineering curriculum.
  • Ability to travel to the field approximately 50% of the time, including spending up to a week or two at a project location.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle in remote or backcountry conditions.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Willingness to learn new survey, monitoring, and data collection techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D through coursework, projects, co-op experience, or volunteer work.
  • Enrollment in a co-op program integrated into your university curriculum is preferred.
  • Familiarity with GPS devices, digital data collection, and mapping software such as ArcGIS.
  • Experience with technical writing or preparing reports.

Responsibilities

  • Support project managers and field leads on a variety of engineering projects, including stream and wetland restoration, site grading, stormwater management, inspections, and more.
  • Assist with office-based tasks such as data management, reporting, and other activities that support the Engineering team.
  • Participate in fieldwork across office locations and nearby states, which may include extended hikes and outdoor work in various conditions.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues while also demonstrating the ability to work independently when required.
