About The Position

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) protects public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water, collecting and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. We deliver 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water per day to 8.3 million New York City residents and more than 1 million people in Upstate New York, and we collect and treat an average of 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater per day. The position will fall under jurisdiction of the Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations which is responsible for the operation and maintenance and protection of New York City’s drinking water distribution and wastewater collection systems, the protection of adjacent waterways and natural drainage (wetlands), and the development of the Department’s Capital Water and Sewer Infrastructure Program. The Bureau also approves and inspects water and sewer connections performed by licensed plumbers and/or authorized contractors. In addition, BWSO has overall responsibility for the approval and inspection of all public and private construction projects as they relate to the City’s water or sewer systems. The Bureau of Water & Sewer Operations (BWSO) seeks to hire one Civil Engineering Intern for the Cross Connection Unit within the Division of Engineering, Connections and Permitting. The typical tasks and responsibilities of the staff in the unit are to perform reviews of engineering plans for Cross-Connection or Backflow Prevention Assembly installation on water line. Under supervision, the selected candidate will perform engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility including but not be limited to the following: - Reviews Applications/Plans/ Exemptions for Cross-Connection/ Backflow Prevention (BFP) Assembly installation on Water line submitted by Professional Engineer or Registered Architect. - Checks Initial/Annual Test reports for compliance with approved Cross-Connection plans within a duly specified time frame and maintain detailed & accurate records of test reports in the database. - Participates in meeting with the Applicant/Design Engineer regarding BFP Application/Plan requirements. Coordinate professionally with the unit/applicants to assist the unit’s function. - Develop detailed knowledge of all application and permit procedures related to water connections and BFP installations. Prepares oral and written reports as required. - Engages in studies, investigation or examinations related to the engineering functions or activities of the department, - Engage in other reviews and studies regulations associated with water and sewer connections. Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college. A degree in any other engineering area or in civil engineering technology is not acceptable.
