About The Position

Performs technical and administrative duties in support of the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. Responsibilities include assisting civil engineers during the summer months with public works projects. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Performs field surveys for public works projects. Assists engineering staff with construction inspection and project design work. Prepares detailed drawings or sketches for various engineering projects. Gathers information from sewer and water schematic and quarter section maps. Prepares monthly reports and correspondence on assigned projects to be provided to the City Engineer. Promotes and maintains responsive employee, customer, and community relations. Assures the maintenance of safe work areas and equipment, promptly corrects work hazards, as necessary. Investigates and reports all work related injuries immediately, complies with all safety rules and attends appropriate safety programs. Performs related duties as assigned by the City Engineer.

Requirements

  • Current developments and literature in the field of civil engineering.
  • Basic practices and principles of civil engineering.
  • Working with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistics, geometry and trigonometry.
  • Applying concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Reading and interpreting documents such as project specifications, plans, procedure manuals, operating and maintenance instructions, and safety rules.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with officials, the public, contractors, and other governmental agencies.
  • Expressing facts and ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Applying mathematical concepts to practical situations.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a civil engineering, engineering technology, or related bachelor’s degree program.
  • Working familiarity with the basic practices and principles of civil engineering and construction.
  • Candidates must also possess the ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations.
  • Candidates must also possess a valid Illinois driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior surveying experience is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and collaborative skills are desired.
