About The Position

Provides seasonal assistance to Public Works. Responsible for providing a variety of entry level duties related to engineering and surveying.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and current or previous enrollment in post-secondary civil engineering program.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and judge depth and density. Basic computer skills are required.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in different situations. Ability to use independent judgment to analyze a variety of changing conditions and determine the course of action necessary to continue, complete or initiate a wide range of work assignments.
  • Valid Minnesota Driver’s License.
  • Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with department personnel, other county employees, and the public. Ability to manage own priorities and schedule in area of responsibility, or assigned geographic area. Ability to represent the County in a professional manner to all internal and external contacts when doing the County’s business.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as remote worker on highway survey party; learns and operates technical engineering instruments; plants stakes, clears brush, places markers; acts as flag person.
  • Takes traffic counts; researches and compiles traffic information from maps and files.
  • Assists in construction inspection; takes concrete or rock core samples and soil samples; grades and scales materials; learns recording of pay quantities; learns testing of cement and bituminous.
  • Maintains engineering equipment and supplies.
  • Attends work regularly and in a timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
