About The Position

A Civil Engineering Intern supports engineering staff in the planning, design, and execution of infrastructure projects such as roads, utilities, and public facilities. The intern assists with data collection, drafting plans, conducting site inspections, and performing basic engineering calculations under supervision. This role provides hands-on exposure to engineering standards, construction practices, and project coordination while developing technical and professional skills. The position offers practical experience applying academic knowledge to real-world civil engineering projects in a collaborative work environment. Tasks will vary by specific assignment. Any one position may not include all the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class. Wheat Ridge was founded during the 1859 Gold Rush as a rest stop for miners and later named for its golden wheat fields. As unsuccessful miners turned to farming, the area thrived with orchards, vegetable fields, and later, greenhouses, earning the title “Carnation City.” Incorporated in 1969, Wheat Ridge now offers a central location with easy access to Denver and the Rocky Mountains. It operates as a home-rule city with a council-manager government, where the elected council sets policy, and the manager oversees daily operations and budgeting. Requirements

  • Must be actively pursuing a degree with one completed academic year of college course work in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or other closely related field.

Responsibilities

  • Fieldwork, assisting with a variety of data collections.
  • Assist with physical assessments and documentation of slope, cross slope, curb and gutter condition, pavement condition, sidewalk width, truncated domes, barriers, street signs and markings, stormwater quality/detention facilities.
  • Assist with projects that involve working on or adjacent to roadways, storm sewers, sidewalks, curb and gutter, ramps and stormwater ponds.
  • Input data associated with project mapping utilizing GIS and GPS technologies.
  • Support staff review of traffic control plans, field reviews and site visits at construction projects.
  • Observe the placement of concrete curb and gutter, sidewalk, neck downs, measuring quantities.
  • Conduct investigations, prepare reports and calculations, and perform research.
  • Assist Engineers to perform studies and reports.
  • Follow all safety regulations, policies and procedures.
