About The Position

The Civil Engineering Assistant position at the City of Long Beach involves supporting various departments in the administration and oversight of construction projects. Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field, or an Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T.) certificate recognized by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
  • Knowledge of principles, best practices, procedures, and methods of civil engineering.
  • Knowledge of engineering mathematics and field survey practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, compile, and arrange technical information.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual skills (Spanish, Khmer, and/or Tagalog) are desirable for positions interacting with the public.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate various aspects of project delivery and assist in the administration of construction projects.
  • Assist in the design and/or construction oversight of street improvements and utilities.
  • Perform design drafting and calculations, and evaluate survey data and construction materials.
  • Review construction specifications and legal descriptions for easement dedications.
  • Prepare plans, specifications, estimates (PS&E), and project schedules.
  • Provide technical assistance or coordination to staff and consultants.
  • Research and write technical memos and reports.
  • Review plumbing plans and structural designs for compliance with regulations.
  • Investigate and respond to public inquiries and complaints.
  • Assist in preparing grant applications and documentation for contract changes.
