The University of Virginia is seeking a Civil Engineer to add their expertise to the Energy and Utilities team of Facilities Management. The University of Virginia at Charlottesville has over 18 million gross square feet of learning, research, residential, and support space across a geographically dispersed 1175 acres. Facilities Management is comprised of 1,200 skilled and talented individuals who are dedicated to service excellence. Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure, and grounds, in addition to managing capital construction and renovation for University-owned and leased properties. The Energy and Utilities team is responsible for energy generation, distribution, operation, maintenance, and renewal of the utilities infrastructure, with a strategic focus on safety, stewardship, and sustainability. Our mission is to provide a comfortable and safe environment for healing, research, and education. The Civil Engineer will serve in a critical role to enable organizational success, working through complex and rewarding near- and long-term goals. The University is built on a district energy model, with one main heat plant, four combined heating/cooling plants, nine chiller plants, hundreds of miles of (steam, hot water, chilled water, potable water, sanitary, and stormwater) distribution, and an internal medium voltage electrical distribution grid anchored by three 35kV to 13kV substations, as well as a fossil-fuel free utility plant (currently under construction). This team's primary responsibility is to ensure both present and future energy needs of the University Community are realized through the most reliable, resilient, sustainable, and cost-effective plan. Minimizing fossil fuel consumption and integrating new and alternative energy generation and distribution technology with the existing infrastructure are strategic elements of this plan. This position will work in a variety of facilities, operations, and all aspects of the University. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work on and with all members of the team as well as the ability to apply engineering principles, knowledge, experience, and technical expertise to support the development, installation, and operations of University infrastructure, specifically within Energy & Utilities. The role will have the opportunity to work with and from all areas of Energy & Utilities, as well as other areas within Facilities Management.
