POSITION SUMMARY This is a professional engineering position that entails technical work in the planning, organizing, and conduct of civil engineering assignments in the Engineering Division of the Department of Public Works. Work involves responsibility for conducting, planning, coordinating, and evaluating engineering work of some difficulty requiring familiarity and training in civil engineering and surveying principles and practices. Work also involves the enforcement of development codes and ordinances. Work is reviewed for adherence to city policies and expectations by the Assistant City Engineer. This position is a full time on-site position reporting to the City of Batavia's Public Works building. A typical work schedule for this position is Monday to Friday 7:00AM-4:00PM. Hiring Salary Range: $89,417 - $104,996 DOQ Full salary range: $89,417 - $123,293 This position is classified as Pay Grade 15 under the City of Batavia’s Wage and Salary Ordinance and is exempt , with excellent benefits. Requirements

  • Graduation from an ABET accredited four-year college or university with major course work in civil engineering or other closely related field; thorough experience in civil engineering work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering.
  • Knowledge of design, construction, and maintenance of public works, including utilities.
  • Knowledge of the principles of site drainage, storm sewer design, and stormwater management.
  • Willingness to maintain and attend continuing education while applying knowledge gained of recent technical developments, current literature and other sources of information in municipal engineering.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use the computer hardware and software necessary to perform the work functions of the division including CAD and GIS.
  • Ability to adapt engineering principles to a variety of public works and utility projects in design and in the field.
  • Ability to manage project activities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to be well organized, work in a fast-paced environment and maintain effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the general public, even in adverse situations, and to convey concise and accurate information.
  • Eligibility to obtain registration as a Professional Engineer by the State of Illinois within 4 years.
  • Successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and hold an Engineer In Training certificate.
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares designs, specifications and project elements for public improvement projects; obtains and reviews bids for construction and maintenance projects; conducts special engineering studies.
  • Reviews, inspects and recommends approval for commercial and residential site engineering drawings, plats of subdivisions, and easements.
  • Plans and prepares feasibility reports, schematic layouts, engineering calculations, designs and estimates for approved engineering projects.
  • Coordinates design and field projects with work of other city departments and private and public agencies.
  • Coordinates the plan review and inspections efforts of the Engineering Division with respect to private developments.
  • Confers with developers, engineers, architects, contractors and property owners to discuss the City’s requirements for infrastructure improvements precipitated by their development.
  • Conducts the inspections of various public improvement projects and resolves complex field problems.
  • Conducts field survey work to determine grades, elevations, structure locations and utility conflicts, including lifting of manhole frames.
  • Reviews the work of engineering consultants for compliance with contracts.
  • Processes permits, engineering fees, and payouts to contractors.
  • Attends meetings of the City Council, Community Development Committee and Plan Commission related to division activities as required; provides engineering assistance to residents, other departments, and developers as requested.
  • Promotes and maintains responsive community relations.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
