About The Position

The City of Portage is looking for an experienced and professional Civil Engineer to join our Department of Transportation and Utilities!  Are you ready to join a team that builds infrastructure one block at a time? The team executes and engineers construction management; operation and maintenance of streets, traffic signals, and utilities; performs engineering of commercial and private development site and plat plans, administers permits for ROW work, utility extensions and connections; traffic signal timing; pavement evaluation and rating; water quality assessments and so much more.  There is no city without Transportation & Utilities!

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or comparable field of study is required.
  • Five (5) years of experience in civil engineering and/or training in construction, public works and/or public infrastructure are required or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Candidates must possess a valid State of Michigan Driver’s License.
  • Be a registered State of Michigan Professional Engineer.
  • Candidates must possess a thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, materials and equipment of civil engineering as applied to the design and construction of municipal infrastructures.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and implement engineering activities, technical designs, project research and plan review for private development projects.
  • Review site plans, plats and other private developments to ensure conformance to applicable Federal, State and local laws, ordinances and resolutions and ensures adherence to engineering standards and ordinances related to water and sewer provisions and storm drainage designs.
  • Inspect public and private development construction sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to engineering plans, specifications and construction and safety standards.
  • Manage contracts and consultants involved with each project as requested by Chief City Engineer.
  • Perform storm water management and soil erosion reviews for private and public construction projects.
  • Confer with consultants and contractors to outline a work plan and to coordinate record keeping, scheduling, preparation of pay estimates, surveying and final inspection of all projects before acceptance. Coordinates warranty inspections when required.
