About The Position

The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Civil Engineer to join its newly established Structural Services Unit within the Construction Section. This position focuses on supporting bridge construction engineering and structural material science, providing an exciting opportunity to work on various engineering tasks while collaborating with experts in the field. The role offers valuable hands-on experience at the intersection of design, construction, and material science, contributing to vital public infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field.
  • OR Associates degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND two (2) years of experience in engineering OR licensure as an Engineer Intern.
  • OR College senior in the final year of a bachelor's degree program in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field.

Nice To Haves

  • Licensure as an Engineer Intern (EIT) or the ability to obtain it.
  • Experience, or a strong interest, in bridge design, construction, or concrete material science.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for clear and effective reporting and collaboration.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team environment.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and growing in the engineering field.

Responsibilities

  • Review concrete mix designs to assess their compliance with specifications.
  • Evaluate structural-related construction submittals to provide feedback on compliance and quality.
  • Assist in constructability plan reviews and make recommendations for process improvements.
  • Develop or review construction specifications related to bridge construction and structural materials.
  • Provide field support or training for construction inspection staff, including project site visits and evaluations of in-service structures.
  • Participate in concrete material testing and other lab work as needed.
  • Liaise with concrete industry partners to review concrete mix designs, solicit feedback, and resolve specification challenges.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts related to bridge construction and structural material practices.
