This position is funded through the US Department of Transportation Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program and will work on planning and engineering activities related to the Vision Zero Orlando Action Plan Update, Pedestrian Facilities Plan, and Quick Build Safety Projects. The Design Engineer will perform professional engineering work in the design or review of engineering plans and specifications for the construction of quick build transportation projects such as curb extensions, traffic calming, slow turn wedges, daylighting, chicanes, or median refuge islands. Additional responsibilities include: overseeing before and after data collection and evaluation to measure efficacy of such project, including crash data and preparing programmatic and fiscal grant reports in compliance with federal guidelines. Employees in this class prepare designs and detailed specifications for construction or are responsible for the review of plans submitted by engineering consulting firms to ensure construction is compliant with City of Orlando standards and engineering principles, methods, and techniques. Work assignments are received from a professional supervisor who defines the scope of the work to be performed, but the employee is expected to plan details of work and make technical decisions. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion.
