Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field; relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Proven experience (5+ years preferred) as an estimator in the civil construction industry, with a track record of successfully estimating and bidding on projects of varying size and complexity.
  • Proficiency in construction takeoff and estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, HCSS HeavyBid) required and familiarity with 3D modeling software (e.g., AgTek, Carlson Takeoff) preferred.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills, with the ability to perform accurate quantity takeoffs, cost calculations, and financial analyses.
  • Knowledge of construction materials, methods, and techniques, including civil infrastructure, utilities, earthwork, concrete, paving, and structural elements.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and communicate complex technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to review and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents accurately.
  • Time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills, with the capacity to identify issues, evaluate alternatives, and develop practical solutions to complex problems.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development, staying current with industry best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes affecting construction estimating and bidding processes.

Responsibilities

  • Quantity Takeoff: Perform quantity takeoffs from construction drawings, specifications, and other project documents to quantify materials, quantities, and work items required for project execution.
  • Construction Methodology: Evaluate construction methods, techniques, and materials to determine the most efficient and cost-effective approaches for project execution, considering factors such as project scope, schedule, and site conditions.
  • Cost Estimation: Prepare detailed cost estimates for civil construction projects, including materials, labor, equipment, subcontractor services, and overhead expenses, using industry-standard methodologies and software.
  • Bid & Proposal Preparation: Develop comprehensive bids and proposals for construction projects, incorporating cost estimates, project schedules, value engineering options, and other relevant information to present competitive and compelling submissions to clients.
  • Vendor and Subcontractor Relations: Solicit bids from vendors and subcontractors, evaluate proposals, negotiate pricing and terms, and establish relationships to secure competitive pricing and favorable contract terms.
  • Cost Analysis: Analyze project costs, identifying cost-saving opportunities, value engineering alternatives, and risk factors to optimize project profitability while meeting quality and performance requirements.
  • Market Research: Stay abreast of market trends, industry benchmarks, and material prices to inform cost estimates and bid strategies, anticipating market fluctuations and potential impacts on project costs.
  • Risk Assessment: Assess project risks and uncertainties, including design changes, scope revisions, market volatility, and regulatory compliance issues, and develop contingency plans and mitigation strategies to manage risk exposure.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with project managers, engineers, architects, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to clarify project requirements, resolve discrepancies, and ensure accurate and comprehensive cost estimates.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of bid documents, cost estimates, vendor/subcontractor proposals, and correspondence related to project pricing and procurement activities.
