About The Position

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation. The mission of the Professional Standards Division’s Civilian Compliant Statistical Analysis Unit is to analyze statistical data from the CCRB and internal discipline databases, and perform proactive trend analysis at the individual, command, and Citywide levels with support from the Risk Analytics Unit to identify potential areas for migration. The Risk Analytics Unit (RAU) seeks a City Research Scientist, II. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to: -Assist in maintaining Division databases and access other Department databases to provide the Department with data relevant to compliance research metrics through the use of several analytical programs and languages (eg. Cognos, Python and SQL). -Maintain data dictionaries and other relevant documentation related to data maintained and created by the Civilian Complaint Statistical Analysis Unit. -Conduct routine data integrity checks on datasets. Identify and report issues and discrepancies in generated data. -Conduct data maintenance and design general project automation tools to be used by staff. -Create and maintain data visualization tools such as Power Bi dashboards.

Requirements

  • To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
  • A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above.
  • Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining Division databases and access other Department databases to provide the Department with data relevant to compliance research metrics through the use of several analytical programs and languages (eg. Cognos, Python and SQL).
