About The Position

The City Forester is responsible for implementing and managing maintenance and forestry plans for the city's urban forest, turf, and vegetation health. This role involves a variety of tasks including overseeing the maintenance of parks, leading a crew, and ensuring the safe operation of equipment. The City Forester also engages with the community, provides training, and supports the Superintendent in various operational tasks.

Requirements

  • One year of parks/golf course maintenance experience.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) within six months of employment.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a Colorado Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator license.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a Sawyer (or similar) and Arborist Certification within six months of employment.
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Ability to direct and supervise small crews in completing assigned maintenance tasks.
  • Knowledge of standards for preparing and maintaining parks and athletic facilities.
  • Knowledge of traffic control standards and safe operation within the right-of-way.
  • Ability to perform skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of City Parks.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in developing and implementing an urban forestry plan.

Responsibilities

  • Implement maintenance and forestry maintenance plans for forestry, turf, and vegetation health.
  • Assist the Superintendent in managing the City's urban forest.
  • Assess, develop, maintain, and report on a City forest management plan.
  • Inventory, inspect, assess, plan, trim, prune, plant, and recommend removal of urban forestry resources.
  • Train on the safe and appropriate management of the City's urban forest.
  • Evaluate and diagnose the urban forest; recommend and implement corrective actions.
  • Consult and contract for specialty trimming or advice.
  • Lead a crew on assigned work and motivate team members on best practices.
  • Operate and maintain division's small and heavy equipment resources safely.
  • Assist with the repair and/or construction of park facilities.
  • Engage with the public and lead the annual Arbor Day event.
