City Exterior Caretaker - McGraft Park

About The Position

Under the supervision of the Park Supervisor or Designee, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual tasks in the maintenance of McGraft Park, park grounds, & buildings. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Will require weekday shifts. Assist with the annual McGraft Concert Series. Setting up chairs, prepping grounds, meeting with band members, directing traffic, and setting up signage for the series. Historically, 7 concerts. Work closely with the interior caretaker. Cut grass using a power mower and trimmer, and push and/or riding mower. Rake leaves with hand and power equipment. Water the grass using hoses and sprinklers. Edging sidewalks, with hand tools and power equipment. Assist with setup and teardown of City-sponsored and Recreation Department events. With requested City Services, especially but not limited to, trash barrels, liners, and picnic tables. Assist with the annual behind-the-scenes McGraft Summer Camp. Cleaning and observations, work with the Head Camp Counselor. Maintain stock at work locations and pipe alleys, and keep work areas clean. Pick up fallen tree limbs and twigs. Trims brush as needed. Picks up and collects litter. Empties trash cans. Painting picnic tables, signs, bleachers, and other buildings logistics. Performs preventative maintenance on power and hand tools. Along with the preventative maintenance of a small Lakeshore Pavilion. Drive your own vehicle to DPW and report to the work station. No fleet vehicle available. May be assigned to drive a city pick-up and small dump truck, assigned to utilize trailers to transport tools, equipment, and/or personnel. May be assigned to assist City workers and other departments. Earth removal, by hand tools or power equipment. Minor safety observations of playgrounds, raking EWF into place, shoveling sand to walkways, and notifying supervisor of safety issues. Prepare baseball field and pickleball courts. Keep equipment cleaned and organized. Put away equipment at the end of the shift. Mowing of the green spaces along Muskegon Lakeshore Trail and Lakeshore Drive.

Requirements

  • Possession of a High School Diploma or its equivalent is desired
  • Must be experienced in the operation of 4 x 4 ATVs & mobile carts, 1-ton dump operations, and vehicle operation
  • Ability to print and speak simple sentences
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide by 10s and 100s. Ability to perform these operations using units of United States currency and weight, measurements, volume, and distance
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed instructions, via verbal, written, or texted information
  • No software skills needed; however, researching information on your cell phone is important. Use of modern technology, apps, and wayfinding is also important
  • Must be at least 18 years of age, authorized to work in the U.S., and be able to satisfactorily pass driving record and background investigations
  • Must be able to work some evenings, weekends, holidays, and be available on short notice
