About The Position

The City Engineer’s internship program provides students with an opportunity to gain hands-on exposure in areas of Geographic Information System (GIS), Construction, and Engineering. While interning with the City of Cheyenne, students may be assigned to various areas of the city including construction job sites, project engineering, project administration, field design, and data collection management.

Requirements

  • Candidates may be enrolled students in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, or closely related field of study.
  • G.I.S. (Geographic Information Systems) computer software.
  • Basic survey techniques.
  • Basic mathematical principles.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office.
  • Operational characteristics of engineering equipment and tools.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Perform basic surveys and inspections and gather field data, update maps.
  • Operate a variety of general engineering equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work.
  • Maintain effective audio-visual transmittals needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing.
  • Maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 30 pounds.
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

Nice To Haves

  • AutoCAD and/ or MicroStation design software is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Complete public facility asset management inventory and evaluation, utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) collector and handheld computers.
  • Assist in a wide range of construction and design activities. This will include working with Project Managers for both construction and design projects.
  • Assist the Engineering Department with miscellaneous office duties such as correspondence, plan reviews, document reviews, and/or updating files or maps etc.
  • Attend Engineering Meetings and provide input and collaboration.
  • Perform engineering, construction and GIS related duties and responsibilities as required.
